Leicester City defender Harry Maguire scored his first international goal for England as the Three Lions reached the semifinals of the World Cup after beating Sweden 2-0 in Samara.
Maguire, who has been played as part of a back three along with Kyle Walker and John Stones, nodded in from Ashley Young’s corner on the half hour mark to put Gareth Southgate’s side 1-0 ahead. Dele Alli’s second half goal, also a header, put the game beyond the Swedes as England reached the WC semis for the first time since 1990.
This was Maguire’s 10th international cap for England. At this tournament, he played 90 minutes against both Panama and Tunisia. He was a second half substitute in the inconsequential game against Belgium and returned to the starting XI for both knockout games.
