The Leicester duo of Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell had to be content with third place as England took bronze at the inaugural Nations League. Both Maguire and Chilwell started in the semi-final against the Netherlands, which England lost 3-1 in extra time, and played the full 120 minutes.
In the third place playoff, Maguire started, but Chilwell was dropped to the bench as Danny Rose replaced him at left back. The game was a goalless stalemate. It eventually went to penalties, where Maguire took and successfully converted the first spot kick for England as the Three Lions won the shootout 6-5.
Maguire was the only defender to play in both UNL games for England. Manager Gareth Southgate used Chilwell-Maguire-Stones-Walker against the Dutch, and Rose-Maguire-Gomez-Alexander Arnold against the Swiss.
James Maddison and Demarai Gray, both of whom had been called up to the national squad in the last twelve months, failed to make the cut for Portugal.
