Leicester opened a two point gap in third place over Arsenal as they crushed Steve Bruce’s Newcastle 5-0 at the King Power Stadium over the weekend. The Magpies had been the only team to have beaten Leicester in the league under Brendan Rodgers, but there was to be no repeat of their April 2019 win as they failed to even muster a single shot on target.

With Arsenal and West Ham both drawing, Leicester are now two points ahead of the duo.

After surviving an early spell of Newcastle pressure, Leicester opened their account in style with RB Ricardo producing a fine solo run down the right flank before finishing brilliantly to put the home side 1-0.

Newcastle received a killer blow just before half time, with Isaac Hayden getting his marching orders from Craig Pawson for a terrible tackle on Dennis Praet. That saw the floodgates open after the interval, with Leicester scoring thrice in the space of ten minutes.

Vardy’s near-post finish from a tight angle made it 2-0 on 54 minutes, although Dubravka should’ve probably done better, and three minutes later, Praet’s cross was turned into his own net by the unwilling Paul Dummett. A fine Albrighton cross saw Vardy head in his second on 64 minutes, and Wilfred Ndidi capped a wonderful individual performance with the club’s 5th in the 90th minute.

It’s been a fine start to the season for Brendan Rodgers and the Foxes, but a test of their top-four ambitions awaits them next weekend in the form of Liverpool at Anfield. Victory there against his old club- yet to be beaten this season, could see the visitors make a real statement.
