Claude Puel got the better of his former club for the second time in succession as Harry Maguire’s late goal helped Leicester beat ten man Southampton at St.Mary’s.

Like last weekend’s game against Wolves, the Foxes were on the backfoot for most of the first half, with Saints enjoying plenty of possession and the visitors missing suspended striker Jamie Vardy.

Saints took the lead through a fierce Ryan Bertrand strike seven minutes after the interval, but Demarai Gray responded almost immediately for Leicester. Gray’s goal ended a 22 game league drought for the strike- his last goal before this came against Newcastle in December last year.

With the game poised at 1-1, Saints striker Hojberg was sent off for diving (a second yellow card) and Leicester were able to make their numerical dominance count deep into second half stoppage time, when Maguire’s deflected strike from distance found the back of the net.

Saints boss Mark Hughes cut a frustrated figure after the defeat, saying that he had thought his side had played well enough for a win. It was another case of points being thrown away from a winning position- since the beginning of the 17/18 season, no side has done this more than Southampton.

Both sides will be seen in action in the EFL Cup in midweek, with Saints taking on fellow Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester hosting Fleetwood Town.
