A Hare Krishna temple in Leicester has been partly destroyed in an explosion.

A third of the terraced property on Thoresby Street has been destroyed and is too unstable for emergency services to enter.

There had been reports that worshippers were trapped inside the building, but Leicestershire Fire Service has confirmed everyone is accounted for.

It is thought that gas bottles being used for cooking during celebrations at the temple could have exploded.

A wide cordon is in place around the building, which is still on fire.

A local councillor told BBC Radio Leicester that the president of the temple had also confirmed that everyone who had been inside the temple was "safe and well".

'People screaming'

BBC reporter Jonathan Cecil said he had seen a couple of "walking wounded" outside the building.

Eyewitness Fatima Khatri said: "We were all working and we suddenly heard a big bang and for one split second we thought it was a bomb, so we all ran to the window.

"Suddenly we heard the other bang and we saw all these flames coming out and we just could not believe it because the whole street was shaken up.

"Everyone was really nervous because all we could see is the fire and people screaming and running around, all the children couldn't stop crying and it was a terrible devastating scene."

Success And Concerns in Freemen Ward

Citizens Eye Community News Agency visited the Freemen Ward Community Meeting and heard that the Local Policing Unit based at Welford Road is...

Citizens Eye Community News Agency visited the Freemen Ward Community Meeting and heard that the Local Policing Unit based at Welford Road is achieving great results for a modest contribution from the community meeting budget.

Earlier in the year the police received £500 to fund the use of unmarked cars to carry out operations in the local policing area, which includes Freemen Ward. The results were acknowledged by those present, including ward councillors, Dale Keeling and Bill Shelton, as excellent value for money.

David Budd, Co-ordinator of Welford Road Police Station, spoke about the money being spent on the use of 5 different cars to support operations. He said that the team was required to change vehicles as each car was eventually recognised by criminals in the area.

He went on to describe operations where the use of the cars had supported the Neighbourhood Action Team to cover 3,400 miles in the local area. Mr Budd said that they had been involved in 125 policing operations in 4 months which had resulted in 138 arrests across the local policing area covering Knighton, Freeman, Eyres Monsell and Aylestone. This included 25 arrests in Freemen ward and the recovery of £190,000 worth of recovered property.

Mr Budd went on to describe the Welford Road team as being ‘one of the best, who are often asked to support other areas across Leicester, Leicestershire and even areas out the force. In some areas of work the team is considered expert’

Mr Budd said he was giving such a detailed account of the successes of the team at Welford Road as the pressure on the police budget meant that there would have to be future applications for funding by the police to support operations in the area.

This proved to be a recurrent theme of the meeting, with residents raising questions about how local services were likely to be affected by potential government cuts. There were questions about how housing policy would be affected and the persistent rumour about the closure of Aylestone Library.

There were no guarantees about services given either by councillors or council officials representing housing and libraries. All responses referred to the results of the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review to be announced in October.

One local resident said ‘ It’s like waiting for a war to start. We know it’s coming and we know it’s going to be bad.We just don’t know how bad’

Details of all Community Meetings can be found on the Leicester City Council website.
